What recruiters look for in a digital marketing resume
Recruiters for marketing roles skim a resume in well under a minute. In that time they want to know three things: which channel are you good at, what results have you produced, and can I verify it? Everything on your resume should answer one of those questions.
If you have not yet built projects to put on it, start with our guide to building a digital marketing portfolio — the resume and portfolio work as a pair.
The right format (ATS-friendly)
Use this order, in a single column with standard headings:
- Header — name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn URL, portfolio URL.
- Summary — 2–3 lines targeted at the role.
- Skills — grouped by area (Paid Ads, Analytics, SEO & Content, AI & Tools).
- Experience — reverse chronological. Freshers: rename this Projects.
- Certifications — one line each.
- Education — degree, college, year.
Avoid two-column templates with icons, skill bars, tables or text inside images: many applicant tracking systems read them out of order or skip them entirely. A plain layout saved as PDF is the safest choice.
Resume summary examples
Fresher (paid ads):
Digital marketing fresher trained in Google Ads, Meta Ads and GA4. Ran a live lead-generation campaign for a local tutor that generated 38 enquiries at ₹190 per lead on a ₹7,200 budget. Looking for a PPC or performance marketing executive role.
Experienced (3 years):
Performance marketer with 3 years managing ₹4–6 lakh monthly spend across Google Ads and Meta Ads for D2C and education brands. Reduced blended cost per acquisition by 28% through creative testing and conversion-tracking fixes. Comfortable owning GA4, GTM and reporting end to end.
Replace every number with your own real figures — never invent results; interviewers will ask you to explain them.
Turning duties into results: bullet examples
Use the formula action verb + what you did + measurable result.
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Managed Google Ads campaigns | Restructured 4 Google Ads campaigns into intent-based ad groups, cutting cost per lead from ₹420 to ₹260 in six weeks |
| Handled social media | Planned and published 60 Instagram posts and reels in two months, growing enquiries from DMs from 5 to 22 a month |
| Did SEO for website | Fixed titles, internal links and page speed on 25 pages; organic clicks rose from 900 to 2,100 a month in four months |
| Worked on analytics | Set up GA4 and GTM form tracking and connected it to Google Ads, enabling conversion-based bidding |
| Used AI tools | Built a ChatGPT workflow to draft 20 ad-copy variations per week, halving creative turnaround time |
Skills to list
Pick only what you can demonstrate in an interview, and order them to match the job description.
- Paid ads: Google Ads (Search, Performance Max, YouTube), Meta Ads Manager, audience and creative testing, bidding and budgets
- Analytics & tracking: GA4, Google Tag Manager, conversion tracking, Meta Pixel, Looker Studio, Excel/Google Sheets
- SEO & content: keyword research, on-page SEO, Google Search Console, content briefs, copywriting
- AI & tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Canva, basic landing-page builders
Resume for freshers vs experienced
Freshers: lead with a Projects section of 3–4 real projects with numbers (live campaigns, tracking setup, SEO audit). Add internships, freelance or family-business work. Keep education short.
Experienced (2+ years): lead with experience, and for each role show spend managed, channels owned and 2–4 quantified wins. Drop college-level details and generic certificates.

Mistakes that get digital marketing resumes rejected
- Listing duties ("responsible for…") with no numbers.
- Claiming ten tools without being able to explain one decision made with them.
- Fancy designs that ATS systems cannot read.
- No portfolio link — recruiters cannot verify anything.
- The same generic resume for every role.
- Spelling mistakes in a job that is about communication.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best resume format for digital marketing?+
A reverse-chronological, single-column format with clear headings: header with portfolio link, summary, skills, experience (or projects for freshers), certifications and education. It reads well for humans and passes ATS filters.
How do I write a digital marketing resume with no experience?+
Replace the experience section with a 'Projects' section: 3–4 real projects such as a live Google Ads or Meta Ads campaign with a small budget, a GA4 setup or an SEO audit — each with numbers and a portfolio link. Add internships, freelance or family-business work if you have any.
What skills should I put on a digital marketing resume?+
List the tools and skills from the job description that you can genuinely demonstrate: Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, GA4, Google Tag Manager, SEO tools, Search Console, Canva, Excel/Sheets, Looker Studio and AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini. Group them rather than rating yourself with stars or bars.
Should a digital marketing resume be one page?+
Yes for freshers and anyone under about five years of experience. Senior marketers can use two pages if every line adds evidence.
Do certifications help a digital marketing resume?+
They help pass keyword filters and show initiative — Google Ads, Google Analytics and Meta certifications are common. But list them briefly; projects and results carry far more weight.
Should I add a photo to my resume?+
It isn't required, and many ATS systems handle photos poorly. A clean, text-only resume is safer; your LinkedIn profile can carry the photo.
How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?+
Use standard headings, a single column, common fonts, no text inside images or tables, and include exact keywords from the job description where they honestly apply. Save as PDF unless the employer asks for Word.
Should I tailor my resume for every job?+
Tailor the summary and the skills order for each role — it takes 10 minutes and noticeably improves shortlisting. The core experience bullets can stay the same.
