Why a portfolio matters more than a certificate
When an agency or brand hires a fresher, they are asking one question: can this person run a campaign without breaking things? A certificate says you watched the lessons. A portfolio shows you did the work — you picked an audience, spent real money, read the numbers and made a decision.
That is why a portfolio is the single biggest hiring lever for freshers and career switchers. It is also where most applicants are weakest, so even a modest one puts you ahead. If you are still deciding which role to aim for, start with our guide to digital marketing jobs in India.
What every case study should include
Use the same simple structure for each project so a recruiter can scan it in 60 seconds:
| Section | What to write |
|---|---|
| Goal | One line: what the business needed (e.g. "get enquiries for a home tutor in Kukatpally") |
| Audience & channel | Who you targeted and where (Google Search, Instagram, SEO, email) |
| What you did | 4–6 bullet points: structure, targeting, creatives, keywords, landing page, tracking |
| Budget & timeline | Spend and duration, even if small (₹1,500 over 10 days is fine) |
| Results | Impressions, clicks, CTR, leads or sales, cost per lead or ROAS |
| Proof | 2–4 screenshots from Ads Manager, Google Ads, GA4 or Search Console |
| Lessons | What worked, what didn't, what you would change next time |
Be honest about scale. Small numbers presented clearly and explained well are far more convincing than big numbers without proof.
12 digital marketing projects you can build
Paid advertising
1. Google Search Ads lead campaign. Pick a local service (a tutor, clinic, salon or a family business). Build one campaign with 2–3 tightly themed ad groups, write responsive search ads, add negative keywords, and send traffic to a simple landing page with a form. Report cost per lead and the search terms that converted.
2. Meta Ads campaign with creative testing. Run a leads or traffic campaign on Facebook and Instagram with three different creatives (image, carousel, short video) against the same audience. Show which one won and why. This is the project interviewers ask about most for social roles.
3. Retargeting campaign. Using the Meta Pixel or Google tag, build an audience of site visitors and show them a follow-up ad. Even with small numbers this proves you understand the funnel.
4. Account audit of a real advertiser. Use the public Meta Ad Library to study a competitor's ads, then write a one-page audit: what they test, the offers they use, what you would change. Zero budget needed.
Tracking and analytics
5. GA4 + conversion tracking setup. Install GA4 and Google Tag Manager on a site you control (a free blog or a friend's store), set up a form-submit key event, and connect it to Google Ads. Document every step with screenshots. This is the project most candidates lack — see our conversion tracking guide.
6. Monthly performance dashboard. Build a Looker Studio or Google Sheets report pulling in traffic, leads and spend. Explain which three numbers a business owner should look at weekly.
SEO and content
7. SEO audit of a local business website. Check titles, meta descriptions, page speed, mobile layout, Google Business Profile and internal links. Deliver a prioritised fix list. Real businesses often let freshers do this for free.
8. Keyword research and content brief. Choose a topic, research keywords, map search intent, and write a brief a writer could use. Bonus: write the article yourself and track its impressions in Search Console.
9. Rank a page on a personal blog. Publish 5–10 useful posts on a narrow topic and report impressions, clicks and positions after 6–8 weeks. Slow, but powerful proof.
Social, email and AI
10. 30-day social content calendar. Plan and publish a month of posts for a small brand, with a clear goal (followers, enquiries, saves). Report what content formats performed best.
11. Email or WhatsApp nurture sequence. Write a 4–5 message sequence for new leads of a course, clinic or shop, with subject lines and the goal of each message.
12. AI-assisted campaign workflow. Show how you used ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to research an audience, draft ad copy variations and summarise results — with the human edits you made. Employers now expect AI fluency; see the best AI tools for digital marketing.
Which projects to pick for your target role
| Target role | Best 3–4 projects |

| Social media executive | 2, 3, 10, 12 |
| SEO executive | 7, 8, 9, 5 |
| Content marketer | 8, 9, 11, 12 |

How to present your portfolio
- Format: one web page, a Notion page or a clean 6–10 page PDF. One click to open, no login.
- Order: your strongest, most relevant project first.
- Length: one page (or one screen) per project.
- Where to link it: top of your résumé, LinkedIn Featured section, and every job application. Our digital marketing resume guide shows exactly where it goes.
- Be ready to talk: interviewers will pick one project and ask "why did you do that?" Prepare a 2-minute walkthrough for each.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a digital marketing portfolio without experience?+
Yes. Most freshers start with self-initiated projects: a small live ad campaign with their own budget, an SEO audit of a real website, a GA4 setup, or free work for a local business or family shop. Label them honestly as personal or freelance projects — employers value the thinking and the numbers, not who paid you.
How many projects should a digital marketing portfolio have?+
Three to six. One strong project per skill you want to be hired for is ideal — for example one Google Ads, one Meta Ads, one SEO or content, and one tracking/analytics project.
What should each portfolio project include?+
The goal, the audience, what you did step by step, the budget and timeline, the results in numbers (impressions, clicks, CTR, leads, cost per lead or ROAS), screenshots as proof, and what you would do differently next time.
Where should I host my digital marketing portfolio?+
A simple one-page website, a Notion page, a Google Drive folder or a well-designed PDF all work. What matters is that it opens in one click from your résumé and your LinkedIn Featured section.
Do I need to spend money on ads to build a portfolio?+
Not necessarily, but a small live campaign — even a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees — is the most convincing proof you can show. SEO, content, analytics and audit projects can be done for free.
Is a failed campaign worth including?+
Often, yes. A campaign that underperformed, with a clear explanation of why and what you changed, shows exactly the diagnostic thinking interviewers test.
Should I include certificates in my portfolio?+
List them briefly on your résumé, but keep the portfolio for projects. Certificates show you studied; projects show you can do the work.
How long does it take to build a portfolio?+
With focus, four to eight weeks is realistic for three to four projects, especially if you learn and build at the same time, as students do in a live course with real campaigns.
