What a digital marketer actually does

A digital marketer helps a business get customers online — through search ads, social ads, SEO, content, email and analytics — and proves it with numbers. Day to day that means planning campaigns, writing ads, choosing audiences, reading reports and deciding what to change next.

Most roles fall into a few families: performance marketing (Google Ads, Meta Ads), SEO, content, social media, and analytics. See the full breakdown with salaries in our guide to digital marketing jobs in India.

The skills you need, in the right order

OrderSkillWhy it comes here
1Fundamentals: funnels, audiences, metricsEverything else builds on these concepts
2One core channel in depth (Google Ads, Meta Ads or SEO)Depth in one area is what gets you hired
3GA4 and conversion trackingMost job descriptions list it; most beginners skip it
4AI tools for research, copy and reportingNow expected in almost every role
5A second, complementary channelMakes you "T-shaped" and more versatile
6Communication and reportingYou must explain results to managers and clients

The 90-day roadmap

Days 1–14: fundamentals

Learn how a funnel works, how to define an audience, and the metrics every interview uses: impressions, CTR, CPC, conversion rate, cost per lead and ROAS. Our ROAS formula guide covers the maths. Pick your target role by the end of week two.

Days 15–45: one core channel, with a live project

Go deep on the channel you chose. For paid ads, build a real campaign with a small budget for a local business or your own offer. For SEO, audit a real site and start a small blog. The goal is real numbers you can talk about, not perfect results.

Days 30–45: tracking and analytics (overlapping)

Install GA4 and Google Tag Manager, set up a form-submit key event, and connect it to your ad account. This single skill separates you from most applicants — our conversion tracking guide walks through it.

Days 45–60: AI workflows and a second channel

Use ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to research audiences, draft ad variations and summarise reports — always editing the output yourself. Then learn the basics of a complementary channel (e.g. Meta Ads if you started with Google Ads). See how AI is used in digital marketing.

Days 61–75: package your proof

Turn your 3–4 best projects into short case studies using the template in our portfolio guide. Rewrite your resume around results using our digital marketing resume guide, and optimise your LinkedIn headline, About and Featured sections.

Days 76–90: apply systematically

Apply to 10–15 well-matched roles or internships a week, follow up after five days, and track every application. Prepare with our digital marketing interview questions. Browse live openings on the PMAcademy jobs portal.

Internships: a smart first step

Agencies and startups hire interns year-round, often with a stipend, and regularly convert good interns into full-time staff. You don't need experience to apply — two or three small projects and a clear note explaining what you did are usually enough to get a conversation. Treat an internship as paid training on real accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become a digital marketer without a degree?+

Yes. Digital marketing hires on demonstrated skill. People enter from commerce, engineering, arts, and after career breaks. A portfolio of real projects matters far more than your degree.

How long does it take to become a digital marketer?+

With 2–3 focused hours a day, about 90 days is realistic to reach job-ready level in one specialisation: roughly 60 days of learning and building projects and 30 days of packaging and applying.

Which digital marketing skill should I learn first?+

After the fundamentals, pick one channel closest to the job you want. Google Ads and Meta Ads usually lead to the highest-paying entry roles; SEO and content suit people who enjoy writing and research. Everyone should learn GA4 and conversion tracking.

Is digital marketing a good career in India in 2026?+

Yes, for people who can prove results. Demand is strongest for performance marketing, SEO, analytics and AI-assisted marketing. Generic posting-only roles are crowded and pay less.

How do I get a digital marketing internship?+

Build 2–3 small projects first, then apply to agencies and startups on LinkedIn and job boards with a short note linking your portfolio. Agencies are the biggest internship employers and often convert good interns to full-time.

Can I learn digital marketing for free?+

You can learn the theory free through Google Skillshop, Meta Blueprint and YouTube. What free learning rarely gives you is structured feedback and real ad-spend practice — the parts employers test.

Do I need to know coding?+

No. Basic comfort with spreadsheets and website builders helps, and knowing how tags and tracking work is valuable, but no programming is required.

Can I become a digital marketer while working or studying?+

Yes. Many people follow this roadmap in the evenings. Live courses with morning and evening batches are designed for students and working professionals.
