Performance marketing is one of the few marketing careers where your results are visible in numbers every day, and that's exactly why companies hire for it. Every business selling online needs someone who can turn ad spend into leads and sales. This guide explains the jobs and internships available in India, what they pay, who hires, what interviews test and how to get your first role, even without experience.
What performance marketers do
A performance marketer plans, runs and optimises paid campaigns, mainly on Google Ads and Meta Ads, to hit a target cost per lead or sale. A typical day includes checking yesterday's spend and results, pausing weak ads, launching new creatives, adjusting budgets, checking tracking and updating a report. For the big picture, read what is performance marketing and our guide to a career in performance marketing.
Job titles to search for
The same work hides behind many titles. Search all of them:

|---|---|---|

| Performance marketing executive / trainee | 0–2 years | Run campaigns under supervision, daily optimisation |
| Google Ads / PPC specialist | 1–4 years | Own search and shopping campaigns |
| Meta Ads specialist / media buyer | 1–4 years | Own Facebook and Instagram campaigns and creatives testing |
| Growth marketer | 2–5 years | Paid ads plus funnels, experiments and retention |
| Performance marketing manager | 4–8 years | Own budgets, strategy and a team |
| Head of performance / growth | 8+ years | Channel mix, large budgets, leadership |
Indicative salaries
| Role | Indicative pay |
|---|---|
| Intern | ₹5,000–20,000/month stipend |
| Executive (0–2 years) | ₹3–5 LPA |
| Specialist / media buyer (2–4 years) | ₹6–12 LPA |
| Manager (4–8 years) | ₹12–25 LPA |
| Head of performance | ₹25 LPA and above |
These are typical ranges from job listings, not guarantees. Pay is higher in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi NCR, and at funded D2C, e-commerce, fintech and SaaS companies than at small agencies. For a wider view, see our digital marketing salary in India guide.
Who hires performance marketers
- Digital marketing agencies. The most common entry point. You'll work on many client accounts and learn fast. Pay starts lower, learning is intense.
- D2C and e-commerce brands. Heavy Meta and Google spend, strong focus on ROAS. Good pay for proven results.
- Ed-tech and coaching. Big lead generation budgets and clear CPA targets.
- SaaS and B2B companies. Google Search, LinkedIn and longer sales cycles.
- Real estate, healthcare and local services. Lead generation with call and WhatsApp tracking.
- Startups. Growth marketing roles mixing ads, funnels and analytics.

Where the jobs are
Most openings are in Bangalore, Delhi NCR (Gurgaon, Noida), Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, with growing numbers in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kochi and Indore. Remote and hybrid roles are common because the work happens entirely online. Browse live openings filtered by city on our jobs page.
Internships: how they work
A good performance marketing internship lasts 2–6 months, gives you access to real ad accounts under supervision and ends with either a pre-placement offer (PPO) or strong experience for your resume.
What to look for:
- Access to live Google Ads or Meta Ads accounts (not just social media posting).
- A mentor who reviews your work.
- Exposure to reporting and tracking.
- A stipend. Unpaid internships with no real account access rarely lead anywhere.
How to get one: apply on LinkedIn, Internshala and agency websites; message agency founders directly with a short note and a one-page case study; and ask local businesses whether you can run their ads for a small budget, which itself becomes experience.
Skills employers look for
- Google Ads: search campaigns, keywords and match types, bidding, Performance Max.
- Meta Ads: campaign structure, audiences, creative testing, lead forms.
- Tracking: GA4, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and Conversions API, UTMs.
- Numbers: CPC, CTR, conversion rate, CPA, ROAS, break-even calculations.
- Spreadsheets: pivot tables, simple formulas, weekly reports.
- Creative sense: which hooks and angles work, briefing designers.
- AI tools: using ChatGPT and similar tools for copy, research and analysis.
What interviews test
- Concepts: "Explain ROAS to a client." "What's the difference between CPC and CPA?"
- Scenarios: "CPA rose 40% this week. What do you check first?" (tracking, auction changes, creative fatigue, landing page, budget changes.)
- Structure: "How would you structure a Google Ads account for a dental clinic?"
- Maths: "Margin is 40%. What's break-even ROAS?" (Answer: 2.5.)
- Portfolio: "Walk me through a campaign you ran."

How to get hired without experience: a 90-day plan
Days 1–30: Learn the foundations. Complete the Google Ads Search and Google Analytics certifications (free on Skillshop). Learn Meta Ads Manager through Meta Blueprint's free courses. See our certification guide.
Days 31–60: Build proof. Run one real campaign with ₹3,000–5,000 for a local business, a friend's store or your own small project. Set up conversion tracking properly. Write a case study: goal, setup, spend, results, learnings. Build a second project such as an account audit or a full performance marketing strategy for a real brand.
Days 61–90: Apply smartly. Update your resume with projects above education (our resume guide helps). Apply to 5–10 relevant roles a day across all job titles. Message hiring managers with your case study attached. Practise interview questions out loud.
Mistakes that keep candidates stuck
- Listing tools without showing any results.
- Applying only to "performance marketing executive" and ignoring PPC, paid media and media buyer titles.
- Knowing only one platform when most roles want Google and Meta.
- Not understanding tracking, the first thing senior interviewers test.
- Sending the same generic message to every company.
Growth path
Executive to specialist usually takes 1–2 years; specialist to manager another 2–4 years. From there, people move into growth leadership, start agencies or freelance for multiple clients. The skill compounds: every account you run makes you better at the next.
